«In the beginning was the word…»

7-й сонет: 'Lo, in the Orient when the gracious light', и 13-й: 'O that you were yourself! But, love, you are' с оригинальным английским текстом, комментариями, построчным и авторским переводом Маршака.

Lo in the orient when the gracious light
Lifts up his burning head, each under eye
Doth homage to his new-appearing sight,
Serving with looks his sacred majesty;
And having climbed the steep-up heavenly hill,
Resembling strong youth in his middle age,
Yet mortal looks adore his beauty still,
Attending on his golden pilgrimage:
But when from highmost pitch, with weary car,
Like feeble age he reeleth from the day,
The eyes (fore duteous) now converted are
From his low tract and look another way:

So thou, thyself outgoing in thy noon,
Unlooked on diest unless thou get a son.

служа взглядами его священному величеству;
сопровождая его блистательное [золотое] путешествие;

О that you were your self! but, love, you are
No longer yours than you yourself here live;
Against this coming end you should prepare,
And^your sweet semblance to some other give:
So should that beauty which you hold in lease
Find no determination; then you were
Your self again after yourself s decease,
When your sweet issue your sweet form should bear.
Who lets so fair a house fall to decay,
Which husbandry in honour might uphold
Against the stormy gusts of winter's day
And barren rage of death's eternal cold?

O, none but unthrifts: dear my love, you know
You had a father, let your son say so.

 {* Другое возможное толкование: "пусть бы ты оставался собой".}

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day'

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date;
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall Death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st.

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

а [арендный] срок лета слишком краток;
лишается своей отделки в силу случая или изменчивости природы;

 {* В оригинале - "thou ow'st"; по мнению исследователей, глагол "owe" здесь следует читать как "own" (владеть, обладать).}

8 класс: in a travel agency - английское путешествие в Рим с Редьярдом Киплингом!

In a travel agency -

Good morning, Madam! Is it a travel agency (1)? O.K. May I trouble you for a moment? I'm interested in your Rome vacation package. I saw your advertisement (2) in a newspaper yesterday. I wonder whether there are any seats available in May and if I can reserve a round-trip ticket (3). And one more thing I'd like to know whether there is a non-stop flight (4) early in the morning on the 5th of May. Oh, I'm glad to hear that there arc the tickets for British Airways flight on that date. Please, hold the reservation for me.
Of course, I know that Rome is one of the most exciting cities in the World. I hope that there is plenty to see and do in Rome. The matter is I study English and Italian at college and it'll be a splendid opportunity (5) for me not only to go sightseeing (6) but also to improve (7) both my English and Italian.
It is my first trip abroad and I'm happy to hear that you may arrange a terrific package tour and I'll travel on a regularly scheduled flight (8). It is rather important for me to know that I'll be met at the airport and taken to a hotel. I like the idea that the hotel is near the beach and that there is a swimming pool and a great disco there. I'm also glad to know that meals in the restaurant aren't very expensive.
In general I see that I've made a right choice (9) addressing your travel agency. Thank you for such detailed information about conditions of my future trip to Rome. I'll certainly make the best of all your recommendations and suggestions how to organise my journey effectively.

 Vocabulary
1. travel agency —
2. advertisement — реклама
3. to reserve a round-trip ticket —
4. a non-stop flight —
5. a splendid opportunity —
6. to go sightseeing — оглядывать достопримечательности
7. improve —
8. a regularly scheduled flight —
9. to make a right choice —

 Questions
1. Are you fond of travelling?
2. What is your favourite kind of travelling?
3. Have you ever travelled abroad?
4. Do you like to travel alone or with your friends?
5. Why do so many people like to travel?

Filmed on our Study Abroad 2012 in Orvieto, Italy Kansas State University, College of Architecture Planning and Design Audio Track: Chevaliers de Sangreal by the Great Hans Zimmer Featuring "If" by Rudyard Kipling, voiced by Sir Michael Caine

If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event that since 1966 has taken place on the streets of Notting Hill, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London, UK each August, over three days (the August bank holiday Monday and the two days beforehand). It is led by members of the West Indian community.
The carnival has attracted around one million people in the past years, making it one of the largest street festivals in the world. The roots of the Notting Hill Carnival come from two separate but connected strands. A "Caribbean Carnival" was held on 30 January 1959 in St Pancras Town Hall as a response to the depressing state of race relations at the time; the UK's first widespread racial attacks (the Notting Hill race riots) had occurred the previous year. The other important strand was the "hippie" London Free School-inspired festival in Notting Hill that became the first organised outside event in August 1966.

Поздравления учителям и ученицам: «English song contest among secondary schools in Dzerzhinsk - Школьный конкурс песни на английском языке в городе Дзержинске».

«British meal. English Afternoon Tea.

The usual meals in Great Britain are break¬fast, lunch and supper. Breakfast is generally a bigger meal than you have on the Continent, though some English people like a 'continental' breakfast of rolls and butter and coffee. But the usual English breakfast is porridge or 'Corn Flakes' with milk or cream and sugar, bacon and eggs; marmalade (made from oranges) with buttered toast, and tea or coffee. For a change (1) you can have a boiled egg, cold ham, or perhaps fish.
All Englishmen generally have lunch about one o'clock. The businessman in London usually finds it impossible to come home for lunch; but if the Englishman is making lunch at home he has cold meat (left over probably from yesterday's dinner), potatoes, salad and pickles (2), with a pudding or fruit to follow. Sometimes he has a mutton chop, or steak and chips, followed by biscuits and cheese, and some people like a glass of light beer with lunch.
Afternoon tea you can hardly call a meal, but it is a sociable sort of thing, as friends often come in then for a chat (3) while they have their cup of tea, cake or biscuit. In some houses dinner is the biggest meal of the day. They begin with soup, followed by fish, roast chicken, potatoes and vegetables, a sweet, fruit and nuts. Then they go into the sitting-room for coffee and the cigarettes. In a great many English homes, they make the mid¬day meal the chief (4) one of the day, and in the evening they have the much simpler supper — an omelettes, or sausages, sometimes bacon and eggs and sometimes just bread and cheese, a cup of coffee or cocoa and fruit.
Tea making in England is an art. The hostess first of all rinses the teapot with boiling water (this is called 'warming the pot') before adding four or five teaspoonfuls of tea. The amount of tea varies, of course, according to the number of people present. The pot is then filled with boiling water and covered by a tea-cosy (5) to allow the tea to infuse (6) for five minutes. English people seldom put lemon juice or rum (7) in their tea, usually they have it with milk.
The English have a special taste for fish and chips. Everybody seems to have fish and chips at home at least once a week and every English town has in its side streets the shop. The pieces of fish are dipped in batter (8) and then dropped into deep boiling oil for a few minutes. They come out crisp (9) and hot and are then wrapped in grease-proof paper (10) and handed to the customer to take away. Attached to some shops is a small cafe where you can eat your fish and chips without taking them home.

6. to infuse -
7. rum - ром
8. batter -

5. What is the main problem about fish and chips?

Tara de la Motte - English Afternoon Tea Sandwich Recipe Programme.

The Origins of Afternoon Tea
Tea One lump or two?
Afternoon tea is a civilised affair; it has all the sophistication of smart entertaining but in a relaxed environment - a meal of informal elegance that can be enjoyed in the cozy, relaxed environment of your sitting room or garden.

Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is often credited with the invention of the tradition of afternoon tea in the early 1840's.
Traditionally dinner was not served until 8:30 or 9:00pm in the evening and the Duchess often became hungry, especially in the summer when dinner was served even later.
She ordered a small meal of bread, butter, and other niceties, such as cakes, tarts, and biscuits, to be brought secretly to her boudoir.
When she was exposed she was not ridiculed, but her habit caught on and the concept of a small meal, of niceties and perhaps tea, became popular and eventually known as "afternoon tea".
Obviously the origins of the well known British tradition of afternoon tea cannot be credited to only one woman, but evolved over a period of time, as many cultural customs do.

How to Serve an Afternoon Tea
Not only does Agatha Christie's quintessentially English detective, Miss Marple, knit and solve crimes but she also serves a traditional afternoon tea to die for! Here's how you can do the same.
Select the prettiest, most delicate, china tea service that you own. Make sure your cutlery is gleaming bright. Set the table with a snowy white lacy or linen table cloth. Add matching napkins.
Use tea leaves rather than teabags, if possible, and provide a tea strainer. Set out the essentials. As well as milk and sugar, provide a small dish of thinly sliced lemons. Provide two teapots. One teapot should contain the actual tea. The other one should be filled with hot water.
Serve dainty finger sandwiches, and scones with clotted cream and home made jam, delicate sweet golden crumbly biscuits, mouthwatering slices of buttery, freshly baked cakes and other fancies such as meringues and fruit - filled tartlets..
Have a three-tiered cake stand with sandwiches on the bottom tier, freshly baked scones on the middle tier and a selection of fruitcake and fairy/cream cakes on the top tier. Set out the condiments. Put jam, honey, clotted cream and butter into small individual pots or dishes.
All these delicious treats create the quintessential English teatime experience.

Whether you eat to live or live to eat, food should help keep you well. In the modern world of processed and preserved foods, many nutritionists (1) are suggesting that you can stay healthy with a well-balanced diet of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and not too much lean meat, salt or sugar. In fact, eating natural, unprocessed foods that are made from scratch (2), instead ofartificial and junk foods (3), may not only keep you healthy, but save your money too.
To stay healthy, you must also be careful to avoid food poisoning, a common, unpleasant, and often dangerous illness that affects one out of every six Americans each year. Food poisoning is often caused by salmonella bacteria (4) in food, especially raw meats and dairy products. Heat usually kills the bacteria, and refrigeration keeps them from growing. Also, be sure to keep your hands and cooking utensils clean so you don't transfer germs to the food while you are preparing it.
If you use canned food (5), always check the cans for leaks or puffiness. A puffed can could mean botulism, a fatal type of food poisoning that you cannot see or smell. Never taste any food that you suspect has spoiled. Instead, return any damaged cans or spoiled food to the grocery store, and the sales manager will refund your money. When using processed foods, be sure to read all the labels (6) and check the ingredients and the freshness date (7) before you buy or eat the food.
Eating is one of the joys of life. Being careful about what you put in your mouth can keep it that way.

Vocabulary
1. nutritionists -
2. to be made from scratch -
3. artificial and junk foods-
4. salmonella bacteria -
5. canned food - консервы
6. label - метка
7. freshness date -

 Questions
1. What do many nutritionists suggest nowadays?
2. What is called an artificial and junk food?
3. What should be done to stay healthy?
4. What should be done with canned food?
5. Why is it necessary to read all the labels?

Water Changes Everything.
Almost a billion people live without clean drinking water. We call this the water crisis. It's a crisis because it only starts with water -- but water affects everything in life.
Health. Education. Food security. The lives of women, especially. We can end the water crisis in our lifetime. But first we have to let everyone know it's happening. Learn how water changes everything -- and share this with everyone you know.

«Six honest serving-men» of Rudyard Kipling: «

Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist chiefly remembered for his tales and poems of British soldiers in India, and his tales for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling is best known for his works of fiction, including The Jungle Book (a collection of stories which includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi), Kim (1901) (a tale of adventure), many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888);[3][4] and his poems, including "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The White Man's Burden" (1899) and "If" (1910). He is regarded as a major "innovator in the art of the short story"; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature; and his best works are said to exhibit "a versatile and luminous narrative gift". Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed according to the political and social climate of the age. George Orwell called him a "prophet of British imperialism".

I Keep six honest serving-men:
(They taught me all I knew)
Their names are What and Where and When
And How and Why and Who

I send them over land and sea,
I send them east and west;
But after they have worked for me,
I give them all a rest.

I let them rest from nine till five.
For I am busy then,
As well as breakfast, lunch, and tea,
For they are hungry men:

But different folk have different views:
I know a person small -
She keeps ten million serving-men,
Who get no rest at all!

She sends them abroad on her own affairs,
From the second she opens her eyes -
One million Hows, two million Wheres,
And seven million Whys!

John Mole -

 John Mole

John Mole was born in 1941 in Taunton and now lives in Hertfordshire where for many years he taught in secondary schools and ran The Mandeville Press with Peter Scupham. Recipient of the Gregory and Cholmondeley Awards for poetry, and the Signal Award for his writing for children, he is currently resident poet to the City of London as part of the Poet in the City project. He has also published a collection of his review essays as Passing Judgements and written the libretto for Alban, a community opera which received its premiere in St Albans Abbey in the spring of 2009

Joe Dassin «My funny Valentine» and video: «Нью-йоркские ребята празднуют в школе Valentine's Day».

Valentine’s Day is an occasion for people in the United Kingdom and USA to express feelings of romantic love. On February the 14th is St. Valentine's Day, when boys and girls, sweethearts and lovers, husbands and wives, friends and neighbours exchange greetings of affection and undying love. But the tradition is to do it anonymously.
Valentine's Day 2013 Thursday, February 14
Valentine's Day 2014 Friday, February 14

"My funny Valentine"

Sweet comic Valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
But you're my favourite work of art.

Is your figure? It’s less than Greek
Is your mouth just a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

Don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little Valentine stay
Each day is Valentine's day.

Is your figure less than
Greek Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

Don't you change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little Valentine stay
Each day is Valentine's day.

Don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little Valentine stay
Each day is Valentine's day.

"At English class, we decided to make the project devoted to orphans. We wanted to make them happy! Our teacher is the main in this charity, she stubbornly helped us!
We decided to prepare for the children a concert about Christmas traditions in England. We ourselves were very interested to learn about them.
Preparation took a lot of time, we had to learn the role that the teacher gave us. And our parents helped to design the costumes.
We rehearsed hard and got ready for the Christmas concert. We met even on Sundays. Because we all wanted that everything would be good and interesting for children who had been waiting for us!
December 27, we went to the orphanage. We were very pleased. First, we repeated our roles several times, then rehearsed together.
We started and did not worry. Everything was going well. Children liked the concert. Our teacher was also happy for us. We were ivited to tea. We were happy that we could give a little happiness!
I think we all got a great experience. To give happiness to others is very nice. To do something important that is good. I loved to make people happy. And it was the act of kindness that I have done. Also I would like to thank our teacher It was a good idea to involve us in this project."

"At English lessons we discussed the problems of charity, and we decided to make our own charity project and our teacher asked us to play a charity performance at the orphanage on Christmas day. We liked This idea and we started to distribute the roles and we needed to find costumes and our parents helped us to do it. When we found the costumes and learned our roles, we had to rehearse every Sunday for four weeks we came to the school at 12 o’clock and were rehearsing for 2 and a half hours. At rehearsals, it was fun. We were learning and having a nice time. The teacher said that the show would be on December 27.
On December 27 at the English lesson was the last rehearsal before the concert we all were nervous a little. When we arrived at the orphanage we were greeted very warmly and we went into the hall where the performance must be shown. At last the concert began. Children listened attentively, though not everyone understood. After the concert was a tea party. Then we were taken home by bus. I think we played well, I had fun. During the project I got life experience. I think we made a small contribution to charity."

"Idea
At the English lesson we discussed the problem of charity. And we decided to make our own charity project.
Work
We have done a lot. Chose a fairy tale. Learnt our roles. Sewed our costumes. Our parents really helped us. We worked not bad.
27th December
December 27. We went to the orphanage. We came and began to dress our costumes. After rehearsing everything from beginning to the end we called the kids. Performance went with applauding .And at the end of the show we gave the kids a gift - a large box of colorful New Year toys and colorful electric lights.
My opinion
This day I will remember forever. I liked it. And I got life experienced".

We want to make children happier!!!
"We decided with our class to show a Christmas tale for children from the Children’s home. We had a lot of targets. We wanted to make a contribution and make the world kinder. We wanted children to learn about Christmas and Christmas traditions in England. We had a lot to do. It was necessary to organize a party for children, to raise money and buy small presents. But the most important thing was to visit the children at the Children home and tell them about Christmas. Project preparation was hard. Everyone tried, learned the roles and Christmas songs, invented the original costumes. Before the show we had the last rehearsal. During the show, all tried and performance was excellent. I liked to take part in the project. I've got the experience and I am glad that I was able to make a contribution".

Our charity concert.
"I will remember this day for a long time. We with our teacher and English group decided to organize a charity concert for the children`s home. The purpose of our show was to introduce children to Christmas and its traditions. In this performance I played Santa Claus. Our group was preparing for a month, to perform excellently. And on December 27th we came to orphanage to show the concert . Our class prepared the costumes, and put a make-up. All worried, because we played the first time. But everything went very well. The teacher praised us and we were all very happy that took part in this concert. It was a great life experience. We have learned to understand that it is necessary to give joy to people. I liked everything and I hope that soon we will again organize any concert!"

«Sports in Britain: squash»

The court consists of a square room. Two players with rackets similar to tennis rackets have to strike a small rubber ball. The ball must strike the front wall of the room before it touches the ground. The players hit the ball in turn. The ball must not bounce on the floor more than once before each player hits it; if a player fails to return the ball to the front wall or to hit the ball before it bounces twice, he loses the point. The court is covered and you don't have to rely on the weather.

«Sports in Britain: croquet »

Association croquet is the name of an advanced game of croquet, played at international level. It involves four balls teamed in pairs, with both balls going through every hoop for one pair to win. The game's distinguishing feature is the "croquet" shot: when certain balls hit other balls, extra shots are allowed. The six hoops are arranged three at each end of the court, with a centre peg.
In association croquet one side takes the black and blue balls, the other takes red and yellow. At each turn, the player can choose to play with either of his balls for that turn. At the start of a turn, the player plays a stroke. If the player either hits the ball through the correct hoop ("runs" the hoop), or hits another ball (a "roquet"), the turn continues. Following a roquet, the player picks up his or her own ball and puts it down next to the ball that it hit. The next shot is played with the two balls touching: this is the "croquet stroke" from which the game takes its name. After the croquet stroke, the player plays a "continuation" stroke, during which the player may again attempt to make a roquet or run a hoop. Each of the other three balls may be roqueted once in a turn before a hoop is run, after which they become available to be roqueted again. The winner of the game is the team who completes the set circuit of six hoops (and then back again the other way), with both balls, and then strikes the centre peg (making a total of 13 points per ball = 26).
