7-й сонет: 'Lo, in the Orient when the gracious light', и 13-й: 'O that you were yourself! But, love, you are' с оригинальным английским текстом, комментариями, построчным и авторским переводом Маршака.

Lo in the orient when the gracious light
Lifts up his burning head, each under eye
Doth homage to his new-appearing sight,
Serving with looks his sacred majesty;
And having climbed the steep-up heavenly hill,
Resembling strong youth in his middle age,
Yet mortal looks adore his beauty still,
Attending on his golden pilgrimage:
But when from highmost pitch, with weary car,
Like feeble age he reeleth from the day,
The eyes (fore duteous) now converted are
From his low tract and look another way:

So thou, thyself outgoing in thy noon,
Unlooked on diest unless thou get a son.

служа взглядами его священному величеству;
сопровождая его блистательное [золотое] путешествие;

О that you were your self! but, love, you are
No longer yours than you yourself here live;
Against this coming end you should prepare,
And^your sweet semblance to some other give:
So should that beauty which you hold in lease
Find no determination; then you were
Your self again after yourself s decease,
When your sweet issue your sweet form should bear.
Who lets so fair a house fall to decay,
Which husbandry in honour might uphold
Against the stormy gusts of winter's day
And barren rage of death's eternal cold?

O, none but unthrifts: dear my love, you know
You had a father, let your son say so.

 {* Другое возможное толкование: "пусть бы ты оставался собой".}

Это песня из четвёртого студийного альбома группы «The Mothers of Invention» Фрэнка Заппы - «Cruising with Ruben & the Jets» («Путешествуя с Рубенсом и самолётами»).

"Anything"

For you, I could do anything
For your love, my heart cries
Take my heart, my love my everything
For so long I've needed your love

Oh, when, when you first came to me
I-I-I-I-I doubted your love
But now you mean everything to me
And each day I love you more

For you, I could do anything
For your love, my heart cries
Take my heart
(Take my heart)
My love, my everything
(Take my love)
For so long
(Take my heart)
I've needed you
(Take my love)

Take my heart
Take my love
Take my heart
Take my love
Take . . .

«The Rolling Stone Album Guide»

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day'

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date;
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall Death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st.

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

а [арендный] срок лета слишком краток;
лишается своей отделки в силу случая или изменчивости природы;

 {* В оригинале - "thou ow'st"; по мнению исследователей, глагол "owe" здесь следует читать как "own" (владеть, обладать).}

 What's new Scooby-Do?
Beginners.
My children love Scooby-Do. I love Scooby-Do. In fact, I have not met a person who does not like it. The happy gang of friends consists of: Shaggy, Scooby, Wilma, Daphney, and Freddy. They travel around in the 'Mystery Machine' and get into scary escapades. During their adventures, they meet monsters, ghosts, and other creepy creatures who they must try and escape from. It's not too scary, most of the time. The villains always turn out to be people who are dressed up. At the end of each episode, one of the gang unmasks the bad guy. There is always a happy ending. I was a child in the '70's, so I also used to watch the series. And the style of that era is still seen in the dress and music of the famous five. Of course, there is a lot of humor. Shaggy and Scooby-Do are cowards who will only get involved in an investigation if they get 'Scooby snacks'. They eat enormous amounts of food whenever they can, even strangely combined foods, like chocolate covered corn on the cob! Scooby-Do is definitely a staple cartoon for my children. If they fight or are grumpy, I put one of the videos on, and suddenly, everyone is happy.

Grammar notes.
Verbs: To meet (meet, met, met), to try (try, tried, tried), to unmask (reg.), to eat (eat, ate, eaten), to fight (fight, fought, fought).
Related vocabulary: gang, mystery, escapade/adventure, episode, era, famous, to get involved, coward, investigation, staple.

Advanced.
So, what's new Scooby-Do? Have you come across any villains today, maybe a headless snow monster, or a slimey zombie called Creeper? No? Oh, so business is slow, huh? I heard that you solved a mystery last week. It made the headlines. The mayor of a small town decided to stimulate the economy by dressing up as a ghost and terrorizing the townsfolk. It worked. Tourism took a big leap. But a bunch of meddling kids uncovered the scoundrel; he was thrown in jail, and all the recent tourist business unraveled. I admire the skills of your group. You all seem to have the most amazing running abilities. When being chased by monsters, you very rarely get caught. And somehow, you find yourselves running through the longest hallways that I have ever seen. Fifteen doors, outside of each a small table with a plant pot, is the record, I think, that Shaggy and Scooby have run past, before they find an escape. Wow. You must eat a lot of carbohydrates to keep up that pace. Well, yes you do, don't you? I know of a few pharmaceutical companies that would love to bottle your light speed metabolisms. Well, if I hear of any hauntings or scary tourist booms, I'll give you a call.

Grammar notes.
Related vocabulary: Villains, scoundrels, zombies, mummies, ghosts, mystery, headlines, unravel, ability, escape, carbohydrates, pharmaceutical, metabolism.
Verbs:To take a leap. Exs: He took a giant leap over the wall. The company's business took a big leap. She took a leap of faith and asked him to marry her.
To find oneself....Exs: I found myself alone, in the rain, with no transportation. They find themselves in great difficulty each time they use the car. He told me the end of the story; I would like to find it out for myself.

English children's theatre -

Little Women, The Wind in the Willows, The Story of Babar, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderlandare some of the classic stories enjoyed by American children. Now these books are being placed on the shelves of many children’s theatres across the United Kingdom.
Children’s books have become the focus (1) of children’s theatre in the United Kingdom only in the last decade. In the 1970s many professional theatres staged plays dealing with sensitive issues (2) for young people — problems like coping with divorce (3) and drugs (4). A few professional theatres still present this type of play exclusively, but more theatres are bending to the demands of parents who want to see theatre supplement and encourage reading. Now children’s theatres are producing storybook plays on stage with costuming, stage designs, and scripts inspired by the original books. Many theatres even work directly with a book’s author to capture that feeling of intimacy with a story that typically comes only from reading the book itself.
Approximately 200 professional theatres in the United Kingdom are devoted to children’s productions. Most of them rely on a combination of ticket revenues (5), fundraising activities, grants, and sponsors to cover their budgeted salaries and production expenses. Few have succeeded as well as Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) of Birmingham.
Liverpool, which started in 1961 with a loan of £100 and now has a £3 million operating budget, is the largest of any UK theatre for young people.
Due to its success, CTC has been able to expand its audience beyond the community base and produce plays that travel around the nation. It has recently participated in a cultural exchange programme with Russia, and it is planning a joint theatre project with the Children’s Art Theatre of Shanghai in the People’s Republic of China. CTC artistic director Jon Cranney said of these exchange: “It was interesting to see how we share humour. It has given us a better perspective on ourselves, our work, and who we are in the world. It has broadened our audience”.

The replica of Shakespeare's 1599 Globe Theatre was the project of Sam Wanamaker. In 1970, Sam established the Shakespeare Trust which did the impossible of making way in 1993 to begin construction of the Globe. The Globe was completed in 1997, but Sam never saw the fulfillment of his project since he died in 1993. For the price of 5 GBP, you can be a groundling and watch a Shakespeare production.

Theatre Royal, Covent Garden).

Covent Garden has a plethora of shops, cafes, and the Royal Opera House. Free entertainers encircle the complex for your viewing pleasure. This area once supplied the food for Westminster Abbey.

British performing Arts in the 20th century -

In the 20th century Britain has remained one of the world’s greatest centres for drama. Britain’s many theatres attract crowds from all over the world. This is due in large measure to the high calibre of 20th-century British actors, including Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir Michael Redgrave, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Alec Guinness, Sir Rex Harrison, Richard Burton, Glenda Jackson, Vanessa Redgrave, Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. The quality of the plays is another important factor. In the early 20th century noted playwrights included John Galsworthy and Noel Coward. Post-World War II Britain saw a renaissance (1) of drama with the avant-garde works of Irish- born Samuel Beckett and the plays and screenplays of Harold Pinter. Play wright and screenwriter John Osborne presented stark social realism in his play Look Back in Anger (1956), which was made into a film in 1959.
Britain has more than 300 professional theatres successfully producing plays, about 100 of which are in London, half of those in the West End district. There are approximately (2) 300 professional theatre companies. The world-famous Royal Shakespeare Company performs in London and at theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon. Famous theatres in London also include the Royal National Theatre and the Old-Vic Theatre. Countless amateur (3) theatrical groups also perform throughout Britain.
Music has been enormously (4) important in Britain in the 20th century and London is regarded as one of the great music capitals of the world. Britain boasts thousands of amateur opera societies, choirs (5) and musical groups, including dance groups, brass and steel orchestras; rock and jazz groups.
Important composers in the early 20th century include Sir Edward Elgar, who wrote choral and orchestral music, and Frederick Delius, who composed the opera A Village Romeo and Juliet (1900-1901). Late in the century, Ralph Williams established himself as Britain’s foremost (6) composer, and Sir William Walton composed many important classical works, including the opera Troilus and Cressida (1954). In opera, Benjamin Britten and Sir Michael Tippett created several important works. Tippet combined classical music with popular music — his Fourth Symphony (1977) contained elements of jazz. Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed musicals for the theatre since the 1970s, producing such smash hits as Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) and Phantom of the Opera (1986).
Britain has many professional orchestras (7), the most famous of which are the London Philharmonic and the London Symphony. The BBC maintains six orchestras and sponsors the popular annual concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. Britain has several major opera theatres, the best known of which are the Royal Opera and the English National Opera in London.
Britain’s worldwide impact: in music in the second half of the 20th century, especially in the realm of popular music, has been enormous. The Beatles appeared in the 1960s and were followed by other successful rock groups and singers, including such names as the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Sting. Famous rock-and-roll icons such as the Beatles have had their music played by the Royal Philharmonic with members of the royal family in attendance. Pop and rock music remain the most popular kinds of music in Britain, although jazz also has a large following.
Britain also has famous dance companies that rank among the world’s leading troupes (8).
These include the Royal Ballet and the English National Ballet, located in London. London hosts two contemporary dance festivals every year.
Britain hosts more than 600 professional arts festivals each year, attracting more than 4 million visitors. The two largest arts festivals in Britain are held in Scotland.

8 класс: in a travel agency - английское путешествие в Рим с Редьярдом Киплингом!

In a travel agency -

Good morning, Madam! Is it a travel agency (1)? O.K. May I trouble you for a moment? I'm interested in your Rome vacation package. I saw your advertisement (2) in a newspaper yesterday. I wonder whether there are any seats available in May and if I can reserve a round-trip ticket (3). And one more thing I'd like to know whether there is a non-stop flight (4) early in the morning on the 5th of May. Oh, I'm glad to hear that there arc the tickets for British Airways flight on that date. Please, hold the reservation for me.
Of course, I know that Rome is one of the most exciting cities in the World. I hope that there is plenty to see and do in Rome. The matter is I study English and Italian at college and it'll be a splendid opportunity (5) for me not only to go sightseeing (6) but also to improve (7) both my English and Italian.
It is my first trip abroad and I'm happy to hear that you may arrange a terrific package tour and I'll travel on a regularly scheduled flight (8). It is rather important for me to know that I'll be met at the airport and taken to a hotel. I like the idea that the hotel is near the beach and that there is a swimming pool and a great disco there. I'm also glad to know that meals in the restaurant aren't very expensive.
In general I see that I've made a right choice (9) addressing your travel agency. Thank you for such detailed information about conditions of my future trip to Rome. I'll certainly make the best of all your recommendations and suggestions how to organise my journey effectively.

If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

 Tower of London Poppy Project
In 2014 the Tower of London will be commemorating the centenary anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War through a major art installation, in collaboration with ceramic artist Paul Cummins with stage setting by Tom Piper.
The Tower's dry moat will be filled with 888,246 ceramic poppies -- one for each British fatality during the war.
Blind Crow Pictures have had the honour of documenting the process of the creation of the work, with this particular film focusing on the installation process of the ceramic poppies in the moat, where theatre designers come together with volunteers to realise an ambitious project to commemorate the First World War, which will continue to grow until Armistice Day on 11 November,
Please visit poppies.hrp.org.uk to find out more about this wonderful installation and commemoration, and of course, if you are in London at any point between now and Armistice day on the 11th of November, please do visit the Tower to see this very powerful sight.
