8 класс: in a travel agency - английское путешествие в Рим с Редьярдом Киплингом!

In a travel agency -

Good morning, Madam! Is it a travel agency (1)? O.K. May I trouble you for a moment? I'm interested in your Rome vacation package. I saw your advertisement (2) in a newspaper yesterday. I wonder whether there are any seats available in May and if I can reserve a round-trip ticket (3). And one more thing I'd like to know whether there is a non-stop flight (4) early in the morning on the 5th of May. Oh, I'm glad to hear that there arc the tickets for British Airways flight on that date. Please, hold the reservation for me.
Of course, I know that Rome is one of the most exciting cities in the World. I hope that there is plenty to see and do in Rome. The matter is I study English and Italian at college and it'll be a splendid opportunity (5) for me not only to go sightseeing (6) but also to improve (7) both my English and Italian.
It is my first trip abroad and I'm happy to hear that you may arrange a terrific package tour and I'll travel on a regularly scheduled flight (8). It is rather important for me to know that I'll be met at the airport and taken to a hotel. I like the idea that the hotel is near the beach and that there is a swimming pool and a great disco there. I'm also glad to know that meals in the restaurant aren't very expensive.
In general I see that I've made a right choice (9) addressing your travel agency. Thank you for such detailed information about conditions of my future trip to Rome. I'll certainly make the best of all your recommendations and suggestions how to organise my journey effectively.

 Vocabulary

4. a non-stop flight —
5. a splendid opportunity —
6. to go sightseeing — оглядывать достопримечательности
7. improve —
8. a regularly scheduled flight —
9. to make a right choice —

1. Are you fond of travelling?
2. What is your favourite kind of travelling?
3. Have you ever travelled abroad?
4. Do you like to travel alone or with your friends?
5. Why do so many people like to travel?

If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

 Tower of London Poppy Project
In 2014 the Tower of London will be commemorating the centenary anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War through a major art installation, in collaboration with ceramic artist Paul Cummins with stage setting by Tom Piper.
The Tower's dry moat will be filled with 888,246 ceramic poppies -- one for each British fatality during the war.
Blind Crow Pictures have had the honour of documenting the process of the creation of the work, with this particular film focusing on the installation process of the ceramic poppies in the moat, where theatre designers come together with volunteers to realise an ambitious project to commemorate the First World War, which will continue to grow until Armistice Day on 11 November,
Please visit poppies.hrp.org.uk to find out more about this wonderful installation and commemoration, and of course, if you are in London at any point between now and Armistice day on the 11th of November, please do visit the Tower to see this very powerful sight.

The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event that since 1966 has taken place on the streets of Notting Hill, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London, UK each August, over three days (the August bank holiday Monday and the two days beforehand). It is led by members of the West Indian community.
The carnival has attracted around one million people in the past years, making it one of the largest street festivals in the world. The roots of the Notting Hill Carnival come from two separate but connected strands. A "Caribbean Carnival" was held on 30 January 1959 in St Pancras Town Hall as a response to the depressing state of race relations at the time; the UK's first widespread racial attacks (the Notting Hill race riots) had occurred the previous year. The other important strand was the "hippie" London Free School-inspired festival in Notting Hill that became the first organised outside event in August 1966.

Vimeo.

You've Got to Love London
From Alex Silver: «A time lapse video tribute to London, made during my final days studying abroad in that lovely city».

My summer vacations -
I can't forget my last vacations which were the most memorable in my life. My English pen friend Isabel invited me to spend a month in Great Britain. Of course, I willingly accepted her invitation (2) to spend some time with her family in London. My parents and I rang up the airport booking office (3) and reserved a round- trip ticket (4) to London. Next day they sent it to my place. And, of course, before leaving I had to make necessary preparations: to buy presents for Isabel and the members of her family; to settle all my private affairs (5) and to visit my friends and relatives. On the eve (6) of my departure I packed my things in a suitcase. When the day of my departure came we called a taxi and went to the airport. We arrived there just when the loudspeaker announced that our plane was in and the passengers were invited to take their seats. After the procedure of registration (7) I boarded the plane at last. It was the first air travelling in my life and I was pleased to sit down in a comfort¬able armchair and relax. A few minutes later we were already above the clouds. After the plane gained its regular height (8) the stewardess (9)brought in mineral water, books and magazines. I didn't suffer from airsickness (10) and spend the whole flight, reading books and sleeping. Fortunately, the plane arrived according to the schedule (11) and my English friends met me in the Heathrow airport.
It was my great dream to visit London, the capital of Great Britain. And it came true. Everybody knows that London is one the most excit¬ing cities in the world. There is plenty to see and do there. London has many old buildings and monuments. Of course we visited Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, which stand on the river Thames near Westminster Abbey.
Westminster is a historical area of London. There are many tourists there. Westminster Abbey is the most famous place of interest and is full of history. It is an old beautiful chapel (12). Many great Englishmen are buried (13) here: I. Newton, Ch. Darwin and others. The south side of the Abbey is called the Poet's Corner, where famous British writers and poets are buried: Ch. Dickens, R. Kipling, T. Hardy. Here too are the memorials to W.Shakespeare, R.Burns, G. G. Byron, W. Scott and W. Thackeray. Another place, which we visited, was the Tower. It is situated on the north bank of the Thames. In different times this castle (14) was a fortress (15), a royal palace, a prison. Now it is a museum of Armour (16) and also the place where Crown jewels are kept (17).
Isabel and I wandered along Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park and the best known streets in London. Of course, I could not ignore such famous London sights as the futuristic park in the Trocadero Centre or the waxworks (18) in Madame Tussaud's (19). They are really fascinating (20). I made a lot of wonderful photos that would always remind me my marvellous summer vacations. My trip to London was very impressive and exciting. I think London is a fantastic city to visit as a tourist. I enjoyed it greatly and hope I'd have another opportunity to visit this charming great city.

Поздравления учителям и ученицам: «English song contest among secondary schools in Dzerzhinsk - Школьный конкурс песни на английском языке в городе Дзержинске».

«British meal. English Afternoon Tea.

The usual meals in Great Britain are break¬fast, lunch and supper. Breakfast is generally a bigger meal than you have on the Continent, though some English people like a 'continental' breakfast of rolls and butter and coffee. But the usual English breakfast is porridge or 'Corn Flakes' with milk or cream and sugar, bacon and eggs; marmalade (made from oranges) with buttered toast, and tea or coffee. For a change (1) you can have a boiled egg, cold ham, or perhaps fish.
All Englishmen generally have lunch about one o'clock. The businessman in London usually finds it impossible to come home for lunch; but if the Englishman is making lunch at home he has cold meat (left over probably from yesterday's dinner), potatoes, salad and pickles (2), with a pudding or fruit to follow. Sometimes he has a mutton chop, or steak and chips, followed by biscuits and cheese, and some people like a glass of light beer with lunch.
Afternoon tea you can hardly call a meal, but it is a sociable sort of thing, as friends often come in then for a chat (3) while they have their cup of tea, cake or biscuit. In some houses dinner is the biggest meal of the day. They begin with soup, followed by fish, roast chicken, potatoes and vegetables, a sweet, fruit and nuts. Then they go into the sitting-room for coffee and the cigarettes. In a great many English homes, they make the mid¬day meal the chief (4) one of the day, and in the evening they have the much simpler supper — an omelettes, or sausages, sometimes bacon and eggs and sometimes just bread and cheese, a cup of coffee or cocoa and fruit.
Tea making in England is an art. The hostess first of all rinses the teapot with boiling water (this is called 'warming the pot') before adding four or five teaspoonfuls of tea. The amount of tea varies, of course, according to the number of people present. The pot is then filled with boiling water and covered by a tea-cosy (5) to allow the tea to infuse (6) for five minutes. English people seldom put lemon juice or rum (7) in their tea, usually they have it with milk.
The English have a special taste for fish and chips. Everybody seems to have fish and chips at home at least once a week and every English town has in its side streets the shop. The pieces of fish are dipped in batter (8) and then dropped into deep boiling oil for a few minutes. They come out crisp (9) and hot and are then wrapped in grease-proof paper (10) and handed to the customer to take away. Attached to some shops is a small cafe where you can eat your fish and chips without taking them home.

6. to infuse -
7. rum - ром
8. batter -
9. crisp -
10. grease-proof paper -

 Questions
1. What is the difference between meals and meal-times in England and Russia?
2. Do Russian national dishes differ from those of English?
3. Why is tea making called an art in England?
4. What does the usual English breakfast consist of?
5. What is the main problem about fish and chips?

Tara de la Motte - English Afternoon Tea Sandwich Recipe Programme.

The Origins of Afternoon Tea
Tea One lump or two?
Afternoon tea is a civilised affair; it has all the sophistication of smart entertaining but in a relaxed environment - a meal of informal elegance that can be enjoyed in the cozy, relaxed environment of your sitting room or garden.

Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is often credited with the invention of the tradition of afternoon tea in the early 1840's.
Traditionally dinner was not served until 8:30 or 9:00pm in the evening and the Duchess often became hungry, especially in the summer when dinner was served even later.
She ordered a small meal of bread, butter, and other niceties, such as cakes, tarts, and biscuits, to be brought secretly to her boudoir.
When she was exposed she was not ridiculed, but her habit caught on and the concept of a small meal, of niceties and perhaps tea, became popular and eventually known as "afternoon tea".
Obviously the origins of the well known British tradition of afternoon tea cannot be credited to only one woman, but evolved over a period of time, as many cultural customs do.

How to Serve an Afternoon Tea
Not only does Agatha Christie's quintessentially English detective, Miss Marple, knit and solve crimes but she also serves a traditional afternoon tea to die for! Here's how you can do the same.
Select the prettiest, most delicate, china tea service that you own. Make sure your cutlery is gleaming bright. Set the table with a snowy white lacy or linen table cloth. Add matching napkins.
Use tea leaves rather than teabags, if possible, and provide a tea strainer. Set out the essentials. As well as milk and sugar, provide a small dish of thinly sliced lemons. Provide two teapots. One teapot should contain the actual tea. The other one should be filled with hot water.
Serve dainty finger sandwiches, and scones with clotted cream and home made jam, delicate sweet golden crumbly biscuits, mouthwatering slices of buttery, freshly baked cakes and other fancies such as meringues and fruit - filled tartlets..
Have a three-tiered cake stand with sandwiches on the bottom tier, freshly baked scones on the middle tier and a selection of fruitcake and fairy/cream cakes on the top tier. Set out the condiments. Put jam, honey, clotted cream and butter into small individual pots or dishes.
All these delicious treats create the quintessential English teatime experience.

Whether you eat to live or live to eat, food should help keep you well. In the modern world of processed and preserved foods, many nutritionists (1) are suggesting that you can stay healthy with a well-balanced diet of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and not too much lean meat, salt or sugar. In fact, eating natural, unprocessed foods that are made from scratch (2), instead ofartificial and junk foods (3), may not only keep you healthy, but save your money too.
To stay healthy, you must also be careful to avoid food poisoning, a common, unpleasant, and often dangerous illness that affects one out of every six Americans each year. Food poisoning is often caused by salmonella bacteria (4) in food, especially raw meats and dairy products. Heat usually kills the bacteria, and refrigeration keeps them from growing. Also, be sure to keep your hands and cooking utensils clean so you don't transfer germs to the food while you are preparing it.
If you use canned food (5), always check the cans for leaks or puffiness. A puffed can could mean botulism, a fatal type of food poisoning that you cannot see or smell. Never taste any food that you suspect has spoiled. Instead, return any damaged cans or spoiled food to the grocery store, and the sales manager will refund your money. When using processed foods, be sure to read all the labels (6) and check the ingredients and the freshness date (7) before you buy or eat the food.
Eating is one of the joys of life. Being careful about what you put in your mouth can keep it that way.

Vocabulary
1. nutritionists -
2. to be made from scratch -
3. artificial and junk foods-
4. salmonella bacteria -
5. canned food - консервы
6. label - метка
7. freshness date -

 Questions
1. What do many nutritionists suggest nowadays?
2. What is called an artificial and junk food?
3. What should be done to stay healthy?
4. What should be done with canned food?
5. Why is it necessary to read all the labels?

Water Changes Everything.
Almost a billion people live without clean drinking water. We call this the water crisis. It's a crisis because it only starts with water -- but water affects everything in life.
Health. Education. Food security. The lives of women, especially. We can end the water crisis in our lifetime. But first we have to let everyone know it's happening. Learn how water changes everything -- and share this with everyone you know.

Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist chiefly remembered for his tales and poems of British soldiers in India, and his tales for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling is best known for his works of fiction, including The Jungle Book (a collection of stories which includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi), Kim (1901) (a tale of adventure), many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888);[3][4] and his poems, including "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The White Man's Burden" (1899) and "If" (1910). He is regarded as a major "innovator in the art of the short story"; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature; and his best works are said to exhibit "a versatile and luminous narrative gift". Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed according to the political and social climate of the age. George Orwell called him a "prophet of British imperialism".

I Keep six honest serving-men:
(They taught me all I knew)
Their names are What and Where and When
And How and Why and Who

I send them over land and sea,
I send them east and west;
But after they have worked for me,
I give them all a rest.

I let them rest from nine till five.
For I am busy then,
As well as breakfast, lunch, and tea,
For they are hungry men:

But different folk have different views:
I know a person small -
She keeps ten million serving-men,
Who get no rest at all!

She sends them abroad on her own affairs,
From the second she opens her eyes -
One million Hows, two million Wheres,
And seven million Whys!

«Severn Bridge –

(Wye Bridge).

The Severn Bridge is a motorway suspension bridge spanning the River Severn and River Wye between Aust, South Gloucestershire (just north of Bristol) in England, and Chepstow, Monmouthshire in South Wales, via Beachley, Gloucestershire, a peninsula between the two rivers. It is the original Severn road crossing between England and Wales and took five years to construct at a cost of £8 million. It replaced the Aust ferry.
The bridge was opened on 8 September 1966, by Queen Elizabeth II, who hailed it as the dawn of a new economic era for South Wales.

Component structures
The Severn Bridge crossing consists of four structures, which, listed in order from England to Wales, are: the Aust Viaduct, Severn Bridge, Beachley Viaduct and Wye Bridge.

Aust Viaduct
The 514 ft (157 m) Aust Viaduct is a twin box girder structure with a concrete deck, which carries the roadway from the top of Aust Cliff to the first gravity anchorage of the old Severn Bridge. The roadway is then carried over the top of the concrete anchorage to the Severn Bridge.

The Severn Bridge is located close to the former Aust Ferry. The bridge is a suspension bridge of conventional design, with the deck supported by two main cables slung between two steel towers. In 1966 the cables supporting the bridge deck were spun from 18,000 miles (29,000 km) of wire.
The bridge is 5,240 ft (1,600 m) long, consisting of a 3,240 ft (988 m) central span between the towers and the two 1,000 ft (305 m) side spans. The towers rise to 445 ft (136 m) above mean high water and are of hollow box construction. The sections of the deck were built at Fairfield-Mabey in Chepstow, and each 132 tonne section was then floated down the river before being hoisted into position.

The 2,444 ft (745 m) Beachley Viaduct is also of similar box girder construction as the Severn Bridge but is supported on steel trestles as it crosses the Beachley peninsula. The peninsula contains an army camp, which the bridge crosses.

The Wye Bridge is a 1,340 ft (408 m) long cable-stayed bridge, which crosses the border marked by the River Wye between England and Wales, 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Chepstow. It consists of a single large cable stayed section with two single-leg pylons supporting the bridge deck from the centre of the roadway.

Tolls: Car: £6.20, Van: £12.40, HGV: £18.60, motorcycle: free, disabled-badge holder: free/
Shortly after the opening of the Severn Bridge, Anglo-Welsh poet Harri Webb wrote an Ode on the Severn Bridge:

Two lands at last connected
Across the waters wide,
And all the tolls collected
On the English side.

The toll is indeed collected on the English side, and only on vehicles travelling westwards from England to Wales, leading some people to describe it as a "tax on entering Wales", both in jest and also as a more serious anti-toll campaign.
