I try to work with authentic products. One of the fragments of such as work you have already seen. This is another example of work with authentic material. It is more difficult to understand American accent for us, because we learn mostly British English.  But I found out a very interesting interview with Woody Allen, a brilliant American actor, director and screen writer. And I use it at the lesson in the 11th form. The Unit “What help you to enjoy yourself” the textbook by Kuzovlev A.P.. Those teachers, who work with this book, know that it is very poor with the texts for reading and listening, and the teachers have to look for additional materials. I devote several lessons to the topic “Cinema”. Two of them are about Woody Allen, who has a very long history in the cinematography.

The first lesson
Practical target Pupils will learn to read and to talk about famous people of the cinema, will learn to ask questions
Learning target   Pupils will learn to work with the text
Developing target   Pupils will learn to organize language material
Educational target Pupils will learn about culture of English-speaking countries
At this lesson I represent Mr. Allen to my pupils. Most of them do not know this person, and didn’t watch his films. I try to use a new technology “Developing critical mentality through reading”.
1  Step    At the beginning of the lesson the pupils draw a table. I ask if they know anything about Woody Allen.

What do you know?
What do you want to know?
What have you known?

They try to fill in the first column. They should write what they know about this person. They wrote only one sentence: “This is an American actor”
2  Step Then I ask them what they want to know about this person. And pupils fill in the second column, write questions.
What do you know?
What do you want to know?
What have you known?

How old is Woody Allen?

What is he?

How did he start his career in the cinema?

What roles did he play in the cinema?

Was he awarded any prizes?

……may be others questions….

3  Step  I give the text about Woody Allen to pupils. They are looking for answers to their questions, and fill in the third column. Then we discuss the answers all together.
The text:  Before reading teacher should  concentrate children’s attention on words:

Woody Allen
Was born December 1, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York. As a young boy he became intrigued with magic tricks and playing the clarinet, two hobbies that he continues today.
He broke into show business at age 15 when he started writing jokes for a local paper, receiving $200 a week. He later moved on to write jokes for talk shows but felt that his jokes were being wasted. His agents, Charles Joffe and Jack Rollins, convinced him to start doing stand-up and telling his own jokes. Reluctantly he agreed and, although he initially performed with such fear of the audience that he would cover his ears when they applauded his jokes, he eventually became very successful at stand-up.
After performing on stage for a few years, he was approached to write a script for Warren Beatty to star in: "What's New Pussycat?" and would also have a moderate role as a character in the film.
His real directorial
debut came in the documentary "Take the Money and Run." He has written, directed and, more often than not, starred in about a film a year ever since while simultaneously writing more than a dozen plays and several books of comedy.
While best known for his romantic comedies
Annie Hall (1977) and Manhattan (1979), Woody has made many transitions in his films throughout the years, transitioning from his "early, funny ones" of "Bananas," "Love and Death" and "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask;" to his more storied and romantic comedies of "Annie Hall," "Manhattan" and "Hannah and Her Sisters;" to the Bergman-esque films of "Stardust Memories" and "Interiors;" and then on to the more recent, but varied works of "Crimes and Misdemeanors," "Husbands and Wives," "Mighty Aphrodite," "Celebrity" and "Deconstructing Harry;" and finally to his film of the last decade, which vary from the light comedy of "Scoop," to the self-destructive darkness of "Match Point" and, most recently, to the cinematically beautiful tale of "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."
Although his stories and style have changed over the years, he is regarded as one of the best filmmakers of our time because of his views on art and his mastery of filmmaking.
Frequently plays a neurotic New Yorker
Frequently casts himself, Diane KeatonMia Farrow
Frequently casts Judy Davis. and Scarlett Johansson,
A lot of his movies feature at least one character who is a writer. This is often Woody himself.
Nearly all of his films start and end with white-on-black credits, set to jazz music, without any scrolling.
His films are almost all set in New York City
His characters (that he plays himself) are often a semi-famous, semi-successful film/tv writer, director, or producer... or a novelist
His films often include opening Narration or the protagonist talking directly to the audience
His female characters are often free spirited but naive and often come from small town backgrounds
Refuses to watch any of his movies once released
Among his biggest idols are Ingmar BergmanGroucho MarxFederico FelliniCole Porter, and Anton Chekhov.
He has more Academy Award nominations (14) for writing than anyone else, all of them are in the Written Directly for the Screen category.

4  Step  I ask children what other facts from Allen’s biography they got to know
5  Step  I ask pupils to make up a short story about Woody Allen at home for the next lesson  (it may be a writing or a speaking task)

The second lesson

Practical target  Pupils  learn to listen to and to talk and to write about famous people of the cinema
Learning  target   Pupils will learn  to find out the information and answer the question
Educational target Pupils will  learn  about culture of English-speaking countries

The students  got  acquainted with Woody Allen at the last lesson. They are ready to  tell about  him. They are ready to listen to an interview with him about the movie.
At the pre listening time teacher can talk with student about the following questions:

Do you like going to the cinema?
Why do people like going to the cinema?
What is better to watch a new film in the cinema or on TV?
Are you interested in special techniques or you just enjoy the film?
They look at the questions on the blackboard:
Is Mr. Allen afraid of press?
What does he say about Gordon as a cameraman?
Why does Mr. Allen like going to the movie?
What is the difference between movie and TV in his mind?
How does television influence  the movie?

The recommended words to understand the text:
Cinema - movie
Card –  кадр
Carding –
To avoid- избежать
To escape from – убежать от
To be disappointed - быть разочарованным

Pupils watch and listen to the interview with Woody Allen (two times). The first and the second questions we answer together(they are more difficult to understand) , the3d,4th,5th questions  pupils answer by their own and write the  answers on the papers.

Merry Christmas! Happy Holiday Season.

Царит праздничное настроение, наряду с традиционными фразами «Happy New Year» и «Merry Christmas», можно услышать также «Have a Happy Holiday Season!»

«We Three Kings» -

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar.
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star.
O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light.
Born a king on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign.
Frankincense to offer have I.
Incense owns a Deity nigh.
Prayer and praising all men raising
Worship Him, God on high.
Myrrh is mine: Its bitter perfume
Breaths a life of gathering gloom.
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
Glorious now behold Him arise,
King and God and Sacrifice.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Sounds through the earth and skies.

«Sports in Britain: polo »

Polo is a team sport played on horseback in which the objective is to score goals against an opposing team. Sometimes called "The Sport of Kings", it was started by Persians. Players score by driving a small white plastic or wooden ball into the opposing team's goal using a long-handled mallet. The traditional sport of polo is played at speed on a large grass field up to 300 yards (274,2 м) long by 160 yards (146,2 м) wide, and each polo team consists of four riders and their mounts. Field polo is played with a solid plastic ball, which has replaced the wooden ball in much of the sport. The modern game lasts roughly two hours and is divided into periods called chukkas (occasionally rendered as "chukkers"). Polo is played professionally in 16 countries. It was formerly, but is not currently, an Olympic sport.

West Country -
East Anglia -
Birmingham (Brummy, Brummie) -
Central Cumberland -
East Devonshire -

(Lowland Scots)
South Wales -

Burnistoun S1E1 - Voice Recognition Elevator - ELEVEN!

[Iain] Where's the buttons?
[Rob] Oh no, they've installed voice-recognition technology in this lift, they have no buttons.
[Iain] Voice-recognition technology? In a lift? In Scotland? You ever tried voice-recognition technology?
[Rob] No.
[Iain] They don't do Scottish accents.
[Rob] Eleven.
[VOICE] Could you please repeat that?
[Iain] Eleven.
[Rob] Eleven. Eleven.
[Iain] Eleven.
[VOICE] Could you please repeat that?
[Rob] EL-EV-EN.
[Iain] Whose idea was this? You need to try an American accent. "E-leven. E-leven."
[Rob] That sounds Irish, not American.
[Iain] No it doesn't! ELEVEN.
[Rob] Where in America is that - Dublin?
[VOICE] I'm sorry. Could you please repeat that?
[Rob] Try an English accent. "Eelevin! Eelevin!"
[Iain] You from the same part of England as Dick van Dyke?
[Rob] Let's hear yours then, smartass.
[VOICE] Please speak slowly and clearly.
[Rob] SMARTASS.
[Iain] Ee-lev-en.
[VOICE] I'm sorry. Could you please repeat that?
[Iain] ELEVEN. If you don't understand the lingo, away back home to your own country!
[Rob] Ooo, it's that talk now, is it, away back home to your own country?
[Iain] Oh, don't start Mr. Bleeding Heart, how can you be racist to a lift?
[VOICE] Please speak slowly and clearly.
[Rob] Eleven. Eleven. Eleven. Eleven.
[Iain] You're just saying it the same way!
[Rob] I'm going to keep saying it until it understands Scottish, alright?
[Rob] Eleven. Eleven. Eleven! Eleven!
[Iain] Oh just take us anywhere, ya cow! Just open the doors!
[VOICE] This is a voice-activated elevator. Please state which floor you would like to go to in a clear and calm manner.
[Iain] Calm? Calm? Where's that coming from? Why is it telling people to be calm?
[Rob] Because they knew they'd be selling this to Scottish people who'd be going off their nuts at it!
[VOICE] You have not selected a floor.
[Rob] Aye, we have! Eleven!
[VOICE] If you would like to get out of the elevator without selecting a floor, simply say "Open the doors, please".
[Iain] Please? Please?? Suck my wully.
[Rob] Maybe we should just say "please".
[Iain] I'm not begging that for nothing.
[Rob] Open the doors, please.
[Iain} "Please!" Pathetic.
[VOICE] Please remain calm.
[Rob] Oh! My! God! You wait until I get up there...just wait for it to speak...
[VOICE] You have not selected a floor.
[Rob] Up yours, ya cow! If you don't let us through these doors, I'm gonna come to America, I'm gonna find whatever desperate actress gave you a voice, and I'm gonna go to the electric chair for ye!
[Iain] Scotland, you bastard!
[Rob] Scotland!
[Iain] SCOTLAND!
[Rob] SCOOOOOTLAND!
[Iain] FREEDOM!!
[Rob] FREEDOM!!
[Iain] Goin' up?

British English vs American English.
